CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS’ EMPOWERMENT -PROTECTION, SURVIVAL & DEVELOPMENT

It has been seen that the children of the primitive Paharia and other tribal communities mostly dropped out after primary education among which the girl children between 6-18 years are more in numbers. Birth registration, routine immunization, ante, and post-natal care, safe delivery, and other related problems which are directly or indirectly related to child rights are quite ignorant in the area for a long time.

Especially the girl children and adolescents suffering various kinds of atrocities within families and out of the families. Also noticed that lots of girl children including tribal girls getting married before the appropriate age of 18 or above and the percentage of these girls are 64 % in general whereas in the PVTGs it is more than 75 %. Migration with trafficking also have been the issues in the operational area and engulfing more than 100 adolescents and women every year.

Therefore, to ensure the rights of children and empowering the adolescents below initiatives have been undertaken by the organization this year- 

  1. Strengthening the local ICDS based pre-schooling In this regard this year also 16 ICDS centers have been strengthened through providing capacity-building support, provisioning of teaching and learning materials along with sports arrangements through creating a model initiative. In this regard, the Mata- Samities of the respective ICDS have been capacitated with proper monitoring tools to monitor the functioning of the ICDS functioning.
  2. Running bridge center and mainstreaming of children to formal Education: -This year 6 bridge centers were initiated to support the dropout and never enrolled adolescents especially among the PVTG Paharia and other tribal communities under Boarijore and  Sunderpahari blocks of Godda districts in which nearly 180 adolescents were enrolled to see their school-going process. To date, 60 girls children are ready to enroll in the formal schooling process,
  3. Capacity building to School management Committees: – SMCs started to monitor the different development activities, institutions and also act accordingly and now initiated the preparation of school development plans. The local gram sabhas also support and monitor the School Management Committees formed under the Right to Education act 2009. Through these Acts and provisions, the accessibility of the Gram Sabhas and community members to the schools and their functioning has increased drastically at various levels.This year with the support of the local administration more than 200 SMCs have been trained after their reorganizing at the community level
  4. Organizing SHIKSHA EVAM POSHAN YATRA In this regard 15 days long YATRA was organized with the support of local functionaries’ leaders along with the local PRIs to sensitize them on the issue of education and along with role of different community people. The local deputy commissioner and CMO of the Godda have inaugurated the yatra.
  5. Strengthening of Village Health and nutrition Committees/POSHAN SAHAYTA SAMUH (VHNCs): -This year also through the various Capacity Building training and awareness meetings related to health issues during the period, again 102 Village health& nutrition Committees (VHNCs) have been strengthening in the core operational areas of SATHEE. These committees have been taking benefit of referral services and other health facilities accessible to the vulnerable especially children and pregnant women. VHNCs also actively participate in the NH day, polio immunization, and supporting SAHIYAS for institutional delivery at certain places.
  6. Activation of AWCs- During the period of one year 6 AWCs have been activated (other than model) with the support of local volunteers and federation members. Our staff and a few cadres also provided support to these AWC staff to regularize the whole process.
  7. Immunization of children taken place: – Due to the lack of awareness and poor accessibility of the community to the govt. PHC, sub-centers large numbers of children have been exposed to various diseases which ultimately increasing the children and infant mortality rate. Through the initiatives of Village Health & nutrition committees, Gram Sabha, and their linkages with the health institution 80-90% of new children are immunized through routine immunization. This year the local Lions club also supported the mission.
  8. Adolescent empowerment through different actions to reduce child marriage In the districts of Godda and Pakur, 3000 and more adolescent groups have been trying to strengthen on the basis of laid down the criteria. These adolescents have been taken into consideration with a few indicators such as MHM, improved nutrition, reduced dropouts, understanding of gender norms, and creating the groups for further discussions. This year with the support of UMANG initiatives big initiatives have been taken to empower the adolescents across the district in which more than 18000 adolescents directly targeted through actions such as organizing group education activities lashed with robust training modules with gender, legal issues, common efforts, leadership process, life skills education and along with other activities such as school sessions, community sessions and also sports session. This resulted in a too drastic reduction in child marriages to the extent of 16 % across the district in our operational area. The school enrolment also increased to 26 % in the real sense whereas the drop out reduced to the extent of 12%. The practice of menstrual hygiene among the adolescents also increased a lot to the extent of 72% at the community level and school going girls
  9. Growth Monitoring of children-During the period growth monitoring was ensured with the support of AWCs in which 45 severely malnourished children have been supported through referral to MTC in the blocks. Through our initiatives also growth monitoring is also done in 23 villages in which more than 250 children are taken under consideration on a periodic basis. The children with severely malnourished and malnourished are taken care of by the community and the local health institutions. In this regard, more than 22 children have been referred to MTC during the year to protect them from early deaths.
  10. Organizing KUPOSHAN MUKTI YATRA –This year 7 days long KUPOSHANMUKTI YATRA to protect the children from malnutrition have been done with the gram sabha members, cadres, and govt officials, in this regard the Local Deputy Commissioner has inaugurated the yatra. This yatra has covered more than 12GPs, nearly 109 villages under 6 blocks of the Godda districts.
  11. Campaign against child marriage and trafficking – This year also with the support of adolescent groups which have been formed in 109 villages, the campaign was initiated to protect the girl children especially the PVTGs and other marginalized girls from early marriage and frequent trafficking. These groups have been oriented to avoid child marriage. These adolescent groups prevented 345childmarriagesintherespectivecommunities along with supporting the girls to prevent and protect them from trafficking and physical exploitation.
  12. Access to Justice Project Phase 2 Child is the flower of the society still they are affecting through the social issue of child trafficking, child sexual abuse and most terrible child marriage SATHEE works from the initial stage for prevention of the children issue through which they survive freely in the family as well as the society and access their rights freely.

    With the collaboration of Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, SATHEE started the initiative of the Access to Justice Project Phase 2 for the prevention and elimination of child trafficking, child sexual abuse and ensuring access to justice and rehabilitation for victims.

    In this regard, SATHEE works at the institutional level and organized the meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Development Commissioner and the Education department and other stakeholder who work for the children had shared the strategic plan to make child marriage free Godda and mitigate the other social issue and the book regarding stop child marriage and the book name is “WHEN CHILDREN HAVE CHILDREN.” gave to DC and SP of GODDA. “Bijay Rath” had been took out and toured the entire GODDA from which we have aware the people about the child marriage. It inaugurated by the SP and it travelled within the 10 days from it start. Beside that we had conducted human chain in 16th October which was consisting till 5 km and We had been conducting candle merge at different place such as Kasturba and other school or house also from this activity we had a motive to prevent the child marriage and protect the children from the heinous activity and had been supported to conduct the Traditional Gram Sabha meeting against the child marriage with the support SATHEE have conducted more than 150 Gram Sabha SATHEE generate the awareness among the community people.
